We shot (Mitch’s story) and edited this piece for the Children’s Tumor Foundation of Australia (CTF) to raise awareness of neurofibromatosis (NF).
NF is a complex disease that causes tumors to grow on nerves and can lead to blindness, loss of mobility, bone abnormalities, cancer, deafness, disfigurement, learning disabilities and chronic disabling pain.
CTF is the only organisation is Australia dedicated to supporting people with NF, raising awareness and funding research. Due to limited funding, there is currently only two national support coordinators who take calls from people across Australia who have been just diagnosed with NF, providing them with support and information.
13 year old Mitch, one of the participants of the film, is so mature for his age and shows such an inspiring level of optimism for someone who has been through so much at such a young age.
The thing that is very apparent is the pressure that the disease puts on families dealing with NF and the anxiety that comes from not knowing what health problems the disease may cause over time and what may be around the corner.
